This research poster addresses the critical gap in realistic human central nervous system (CNS) models for evaluating nanomaterial neurotoxicity through the iCARE project. The work presents three innovative in vitro model developments: a static blood-brain barrier (BBB) model using cerebral endothelial cells and astrocytes that demonstrates stable barrier formation, advanced 2D and 3D neurotoxicity co-culture systems combining neuron-like cells with microglia, and comprehensive validation studies using graphene materials that show enhanced sensitivity to inflammatory markers and oxidative stress responses compared to traditional single-cell approaches.
