Recap: Grouping and Read-Across of Advanced (Nano)Materials Workshop

04 May 2026

4 May 2026 | Virtual Event

On May 4, 2026, iCARE and ACCORDS co-hosted a focused virtual workshop on grouping and read-across approaches for advanced and nanomaterials, drawing over 100 participants from across the regulatory, scientific, and industry communities.

What Was Covered

The workshop brought together leading experts to explore how grouping and read-across strategies can support regulatory compliance for graphene and other advanced nanomaterials. Key presentations included:

  • Kai Paul (Blue Frog Scientific) introduced ECHA-funded work toward a framework for identifying single nanoforms
  • Damjana Drobne (University of Ljubljana) presented ACCORDS characterisation work linking biological effects with the physicochemical properties of graphene-based 2D materials
  • Elise Morel (TEMAS Solutions) shared iCARE's application of grouping approaches using neurotoxicity-related endpoints for graphene 2D materials

Panel Discussion

A lively panel discussion followed, addressing limitations and challenges across characterisation, biological endpoints, and computational aspects. Panelists included Stephen Hodge (Versarien PLC), Virginia Rodriguez Unamuno (ECHA), and Wendel Wohlleben (BAuA), offering perspectives from industry, regulation, and science.
